In my previous post titled “What Do You Hate Most?“, I asked my readers what they hate about business if any. After reading the responses, and there were several good ones, I would agree that I don’t really hate any aspect of it but there are some things I dislike more than others. As mentioned previously, I can’t really even say it’s much of a dislike, but rather things that I find to be more time consuming than they really should be and this is in part, due to my own decision.

Without further ado, the top of my list would have to be thinking of business names. A business is going to be the brand and the face of your company, something the public will come to recognize. You certainly don’t want a bad name and everyone’s opinion differs in the type of name they want. With me personally, and this happens every time with just about every business I get involved in, I tend to spend a LOT of time thinking of a name that fits. It isn’t difficult in the sense of trying to figure out what to do, it isn’t stressful, and it isn’t exactly like any of the other aspects of business, but it is one that annoying to say the least.

In terms of business, whether it’s setting up or starting your business, running your business, or aspects of your business, what do you hate most?

I know you guys are out there and a ton of you read this blog because you tell me so, so I want to know what is the number 1 thing you hate most about conducting your own business. It could literally be anything, and there is obviously no right or wrong answer. I just had a discussion online with someone and I came up with an answer that isn’t bad at all, it’s just something I hate doing because it ends up being so time consuming.

I won’t disclose what it is right now but I’ll post my answer later after everyone else comments with theirs. If you normally read and don’t comment, now would be a good time to jump in and let me know.

Yesterday marked the public launch of .me domains. Companies with trademark names and a few large corporations manage to secure their domain names long before it hit the market, as early as April of this year (such as google.me). However millions of domain were freely available as of 8am yesterday.

Some people asked me about what .me stood for. As far as I know, it is an expression of oneself, aka “me”. That’s all it is. Just like how .com was meant for commercial use (and not it’s just use for everything being the most popular domain extension) and how .net was for network or networking.

Regardless of what it stood for, there was an opportunity to make money off this because rare domain names such as 3 character or 4 character domain names are really good for resell value in the eyes of a domaineer (someone who buys and sells domains for a living aka virtual real estate).

Of course everyone wanted cool domain names such as aweso.me, fuck.me, etc… but those were likely to be taken first. I told my friends about it and a few of them manage to secure some really good domain names. I won’t disclose what domains they scored because I am unsure whether or not they would want me to do so. I did look up several domain names I was interested in, but in the end, decided not to buy the domain names, even if they were available. While there is money to be made in these domain names, I suspect this will be a fad that will quickly die out.

I probably could have gotten the domain name, listed them in the online public auctions where the domains are not being sold off, but for whatever reason, decided against registering them at the last moment (that may turn out to be a fatal error on my part later). In any event, GoDaddy seems to be one of the few places that are offering .me domain registrations. The cost is $19.99/year and there is a minimum 2 year purchase required. Therefore you have to pay $39.98 per domain + $10 per domain for privacy if you choose it (which I recommend).

All in all, it’s still a worthwhile price if you can score some really good domain names. There were a few I would have been willing to buy but these were taken long before they hit the public yesterday. If you didn’t know about .me domains and their availability first thing yesterday, chances are you probably lost out on some really good domains but no matter, you can still try to register something now, as they are millions still available!

So a quick update on my trip so far. A pretty productive trip so far. I toured San Francisco and I toured Oakland so I got to see pretty much all the sites and everything I needed to see. Went out to eat at some of the fanciest places and spent some time checking out downtown. I even went hiking up a mountain with massive bushes and trees and felt like I should have had a machete knife on me to mow them down. Below are some pics of the hike… I do apologize in advance for the bad quality pictures as I took them with my iphone at the last minute (I wasn’t anticipating on taking any or even going on a hiking trip, it was a last minute spur of the moment thing).

So with all that, I also managed to spend some time with my dad which was awesome. Both he and I were sort of sad the visit was for such a brief moment but I was down here mainly for business and had a lot of things that needed to get done outside of just hanging out and going out to places.

I also manage to take care of some things while I was down here so overall the trip has been really great. My friend and I are going to spend some time tomorrow hanging out with some of our clients that live down here playing some Frisbee Golf. I’ve only played it once before way back in College. For those who don’t know what Frisbee Golf is, it’s a 9-18 course just like a golf course but instead of golf balls and holes, you have a frisbee and something to catch is in. It’ll be pretty good. They all wanted to go catch The Dark Knight on Imax but unfortunately for everyone the tickets were sold out completely all the way till Monday.

For sure I’ll be catching that movie but I already have plans on doing so with my girlfriend back home in Seattle so we’ll see how things turn out. I sure hope that all of you guys are staying productive/active and keeping busy with whatever it is you’re doing as well and hopefully you guys are having a blast in life. I know I am

I just arrived yesterday and unfortunately haven’t taken any pictures to post but will do so when I get the chance. I got a heavy week ahead of me and will try to update everyone on the trip, what’s happening, and all the cool things I see. One of the things I did notice when I first came here was… I hate all the housing design. Whoever architeched the blueprints for these designs should be shot. All the houses are crammed wall-to-wall with few exceptions and they’re ugly beyond belief. Also, if you guys have never been down here before, there are TONS of hills, a few which are steep, roughly 45 degrees or steeper (or so it feels like it).

I only took a brief tour yesterday after arriving at the airport around town and my friend and I ate a seafood restaurant right off the bay area in front of Alcatraz. It was pretty good. We ordered a whole crab, some other dishes and deserts plus appetizer. I liked it except for one of the Salmon dish we ordered, it was super bland. I should take pictures next time! In any case, will be posting again as soon as I have some pictures!

No, I’m not moving. I haven’t made that decision yet but I will be taking a last minute business trip down there to take care of some things for roughly a week. It should be fun. I’ve been to California a few times before but never around the bay area so it should be exciting. My dad also resides in Oakland so this will be the first time I’ll be visiting him for years. This doesn’t mean I haven’t seen my dad in years, he usually comes up every other year or so to visit me. And my mom comes down every year to visit as well. They are divorced and hence the reason for separate visitations. Although they come down to see me and call every so often, I’ve never really gone down to Oakland to see my dad before. There is no real reason why I haven’t, just never got around to it. Since Oakland is practically one bridge across from San Francisco, I’ll be paying him a visit when I get down there.

A lot of people aren’t aware that I moved out at age 15. Actually, the correct statement would be, both my parents decided to move out of state when I was 15. They were still together at the time. Needless to say I didn’t want to follow along since all my friends and everything else in my life was still in Oregon at the time. So I stayed behind as they moved to Washington. Three years later, shortly after High School graduation, my parents went their separate ways and I went on to college. My mom now resides in northern washington near the border of Canada while my dad lives in Oakland. A lot has change in the past decade and I am sure things will continue to progress and change. I can honestly say it wasn’t easy moving out at such a young age and I only know of a few others who have done the same. I am sure many readers would be interested in knowing the full story and several who know me have already asked many questions pertaining to how, why, etc… I am sure I’ll get to it someday in the near future…

In the meantime, please look forward to my updates from San Fran!

PS It would appear I’ve been on a Movie going mood because I’ve seem to have watched plenty of the movies that have came out since Iron Man including Hulk, Kung Fu Panda, WALL-E, Wanted, Hancock, The Love Guru, Indiana Jones, You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, etc… I won’t be doing a review for all of them but I think majority of them were worth watching in my opinion to some degree if not a lot except for Love Guru and Indiana Jones. I wasn’t particularly fond of those movies and You Don’t Mess With The Zohan was a bit of a disappointment as well.
