Faster Internet Coming Your Way

I thought that the 16Mbps internet speed was a rarity when I first moved here and got internet hooked up recently since Comcast only offered 4Mbps, 6Mbps, and 8Mbps plans back in Portland, where I was originally from. Yesterday, a Comcast technician came out to do a survey in the area for current customers and I found out that the change was recently made in this area not too long ago. The standard speeds available here are 12Mbps minimum and 16Mbps for an additional $10/month. Quite a speed boost from their old plans but how does any of this affect you?

Well if you live in an area where Comcast is your service provider, sooner or later, it sounds like they’re making this change permanent and is slowly expanding from area to area. I have no doubt this is to compete against Verizon FIOS (fiber optic) internet which currently offer 15Mbps for roughtly the same price range you would pay for the 16Mbps comcast internet. If you’re like me, where some of your business rely heavily on having internet since it’s an online base business, fast internet speeds is sometimes not considered a luxury but a necessity.

In addition to having internet at home, I will be looking into Sprint’s Mobile Broadband Wireless Internet card and a few other mobile broadband carriers. Currently for around $60 per month, they offer 3Mbps wireless anywhere anytime (at least areas that can receive a signal similar to that of a cell phone). It’s convenient because it’s internet on the go and you never have to worry about not having it whether you’re traveling and is on a road trip, out of town on vacation, or somewhere else where internet may not be readily available otherwise. Having both a home base internet and a wireless internet (which also has a built in router capability of it’s own) is a great resource for those who work online. If you have an internet base business, consider looking into the wireless broadband as well.

  2. I use a cable service at home for my PC and a wireless one for my laptop. I find that this gives me enough coverage.
