What Do You Hate Most?

July 20, 2008 – 11:16 pm

In terms of business, whether it’s setting up or starting your business, running your business, or aspects of your business, what do you hate most?

I know you guys are out there and a ton of you read this blog because you tell me so, so I want to know what is the number 1 thing you hate most about conducting your own business. It could literally be anything, and there is obviously no right or wrong answer. I just had a discussion online with someone and I came up with an answer that isn’t bad at all, it’s just something I hate doing because it ends up being so time consuming.

I won’t disclose what it is right now but I’ll post my answer later after everyone else comments with theirs. If you normally read and don’t comment, now would be a good time to jump in and let me know.

  2. In some cases you have to work everyday, 7 days a week.

  3. The stress of being responsible for everything!

  4. Well,

At this point, it would have to be achieving my goals. I’m always at the point where I’m not satisfied where with I’m at right now - even though months ago I’d be thrilled to skip to where I am now. On the other hand, I hate being lazy to do things. That’s more a problem with myself - not the business itself - but it’s a big issue with me.

Lastly, I’m not fond of “tracking” everything. I don’t mean keywords, but rather my spending, having to report taxes, tracking my income, just everything like that. OTher than that - I love it :)

  5. I hate how working on your own stuff can get so addicting - sometimes I can stay up until 3-4AM working on stuff - I know it’s very unhealthy for me, and it’s probably reducing my productivity instead of helping it, but I still stay up late to work.

At least when you’re on a job, you know when to call it quits (it’s 5:00 and you’re done with all your tasks). With no defined hours and objectives, you can easily go overboard when working by yourself.

  6. I hear ya Edward!

Thats part of my hate. I hate that I stay up to do one last thing, it always carries me to the wee hours of the morning. Then I go to sleep, and if I hear any noise which wakes me, my mind will start ticking again, and I have to turn my computer back on.

The lack of sleep. Even though I’m the only one keeping myself up!

  7. The single most obnoxious thing that I hate in business is when people do not pay on due date.

  8. Thinking you have some great clients and then finding out those clients are not so great.

  9. I echo a lot of sentiments here.

Picky customers and calling it quits early in the morning.

  10. I would have to say receiving calls all times of the day (and sometimes night). That you don’t have ’set’ hours and sometimes you have to drop what you have going on and make your customer(s) happy - that just goes for Graphic/Web design freelancing - or my experiences so far.

Other than that, being ’self-sufficient’ is pretty awesome. (aside from amazing help from friends)

  11. I ran some traditional biz before. Single thing that I hate most is I cant automate it. Everything I am responsible and do it myself, you cant trust nobody in traditional biz.

  12. I don’t really hate any of it. its all apart of a challenging process.

  13. I hate the fact that i procrastinate so damn much. sometimes i want to chop my own head off for being so lazy! its all cause of fear and being comfy were i am i and thats not what i want for myself i need to get some BALLS! thats what i hate most!

  14. well i’m just learning…i haven’t gone far enough know what i like or don’t like about business

By Mang on Jul 21, 2008

  15. i hate the not knowing how or where to start things off. once you get the ball rolling, then things get easier because you know what you’re doing. it’s the beginning that sucks.

  16. I think business in itself is tough business.

Although, in life their are many struggles.

If I had a choice, I would want to just be rich without doing ANYTHING :) Just have like 10 Billion in the bank and do what I want when I want w/ money not being a problem.

Since that’s not the case, an I still want lots of money.

Business is my only other choice, it beats working for the MAN.

  17. What Wes and Lemon said…as well as not having the capital to start the business and get it up and running!!

By Gregg Hawkins on Jul 21, 2008

  18. The hassle of starting up a business, takes a lot of researching, risk involved (whether this business will succeed or not) and most importantly you’re responsible for every single bit of that business if you really want to get it successful.

  19. I don’t think I really hate anything about business at this point. I am very new into creating and starting my own, however it’s a very challenging and rewarding process. All the time you put in is directly reflected upon what you get in return and making sure you correctly apply your knowledge. I agree with Wes on this one. If you learn to love all aspects, and really put all your will into the outcome, you will succeed. Also I’m one that thinks hate is a strong word, dislike might be more appropriate for me. But if there is an aspect I come across that I truly cannot bare to do ( I hate it ), I would find an easier way to do it, or an easier way to accomplish it, by the way of outsourcing, or help from someone else. Ok I’ll stop there before I run into a short book.

    Thanks,
    -E.

  20. I don’t really have a list like this though, many things like taxes, bills, deal with changes, good/bad business, nasty customers, making mistakes and learning from mistakes etc. are part of the business process and unavoidable, just got to treat them like normal day to day stuff and you’ll be happier.

    I’m still learning though. :)

  21. The beginning. ?????

  22. I couldn’t agree more with Wes and Eric , It’s all a process.

Are there things you would change? Sure, but hate, no.

  23. If you hate it, it wont work out for you. Some parts are easy and others more difficult, but as long as you keep at it, it will succeed.
